The Backstory of The Spotlight

The Backstory of The Spotlight

Two strangers stopping to chat on a city street at dusk, brought together by a dog wearing a custom collar projector.

We live in an era where we are more connected than ever, yet somehow, it has only made us lonelier.

You can live in a bustling city, surrounded by millions of people, and never know a single neighbor's name. You walk down the street, and everyone is just looking down at their screens. The digital world is loud, but the physical world has gone quiet. It's what we often call the modern loneliness epidemic.

And then, you get a dog.

Suddenly, everything shifts. You spend more time outside. You start noticing the trees, the changing seasons, the vendors on the streets. You start to notice real life.

A dog doesn't just give you company in your apartment—he gives you back your neighborhood.

The Winter That Started It All

This was exactly my experience. I had moved from San Francisco to Shenzhen for work, and for a whole year, I didn't know a single neighbor. Then I adopted a rescue dog, and named him Basil. He grounded me. Local vendors started waving at us; neighbors stopped to chat.

But working a demanding tech job meant that by the time I logged off, our winter walks were often in the pitch dark.

I needed a way to keep him safe from bicycles and cars. I wanted him to be visible, but I didn't want a generic, blinding LED light that ruined the peace of our evening walks. I wanted something elegant—a pet projection light that felt like a natural extension of his presence. That’s how the idea for our first product started.

The Unexpected Magic

One evening, walking Basil after work, I tested the very first collar projector prototype on him.

Because it didn't just flash a warning light—because it projected his actual portrait and name onto the pavement—something amazing happened.

Strangers stopped in their tracks. They looked up from their phones. They smiled, pointed at the glowing projection on the ground, and asked, "What is that?"

A Reason to Look Up

In that moment, we realized we didn’t set out just to make a safety light.

We built The Spotlight to be the ultimate social icebreaker—a reason for people to look up, slow down, and start a conversation in real life. Technology shouldn't isolate us. It should bring us back to the real world, and to the people standing right in front of us.
