How One DM Built The Spotlight: Service Dog Edition
In a world obsessed with dashboards, A/B tests, and market sizing, it’s easy to forget that the best products aren't built in spreadsheets. They are built through conversations.
At basil & friends, our mission has always been to create tasteful, personal pet keepsakes that act as social icebreakers. But recently, a single Instagram direct message completely shifted our perspective—and our product roadmap.
The DM That Started It All
It started with a message from Amanda, a Swiss para-athlete, and her incredible pioneer guide dog, Gio, based in Lithuania.
Amanda asked a simple question: "Can I get a lens that says 'MOVE OUT OF THE WAY' for my guide dog?"
We laughed, but then we listened. We learned about the daily friction handlers face: the uninvited petting, the distracting noises from strangers, and the constant need to advocate for their working dogs' space.
We realized that our hero product, The Spotlight, could be more than just a beautiful safety light for night walks. It could be a functional, elegant communication tool for the assistance dog community.

We threw our existing product timeline out the window. Instead of guessing what the community needed, we invited them into the design process. Through countless conversations, feedback loops, and design iterations with handlers across different countries, we learned exactly what was missing in the market.
Introducing: The Service Dog Edition
Today, we are incredibly proud to officially launch The Spotlight: Service Dog Edition. This isn't just a new SKU; it’s a tribute to the working dogs who give their handlers independence.
What makes this edition special?

We didn’t build this for a "target demographic." We built this for Amanda, for Gio, and for the thousands of handlers who navigate the world with their four-legged lifelines.
